Hi guys! I'm not a forum poster, but I watch the site very closely. I'm a lacto-ovo vegetarian - originally became it to help reduce my cruel impact on animals and the environment. Recently though I have been thanking my lucky stars that I made this decision. I'm sure others have seen that the FDA is in the processing of approving serving meat derived from cloned animals (either through breeding the clones to other animals or by slaughtering full clones). They claim that this meat is safe. But is it really? I've followed the cloning info pretty well, and it seems that clones often have a variety of health issues that result in death far before their normal life span. Obviously this is not indicative of a healthy creature, so one should ask if this would be indicative of healthy food. Probably the scariest aspect of this is that the FDA is toying with the idea of not labeling food from cloned animals. Basically, they are considering keeping the public blind to what it is consuming. Why should we veggies care? We should care because even though we aren't meat eaters, isn't it every American's right to be educated about their decisions? By purposefully leaving out labeling information, the FDA is taking away our ability to make educated decisions about our food. This has already started to affect the lacto- and lacto-ovo vegetarian community. Starting Feb 1st, dairies in PA will not be able to state on their bottles that they dont use growth hormone with their cows. The department of Agriculture for the state has decided that by saying that milk is hormone free, it suggests that hormone free milk is unhealthy or undesirable. They claim that this harms the sales for dairies that do use the hormone. In order to "even the playing field" for all of the dairies, they have taken away the consumer's right to information. This has got to stop! If you realize things like this are happening in your state speak out! Write to a representative, bring it up in forums, talk to your families. Regardless of whether we are veggies or not, we all have a right to know what we are eating!!! Thanks guys!
