>>oops just realized that maybe i am off topic?
Yes you are! :)
But, I will answer it anyway.
>>As people age into their 60's, 70's, 80's do they require more
protein than when they were younger?
Possibly.
>>They tell me their doctors tell them to eat more protein because
as we age we can't absorb protein as well from our meals.
Rule # 3 dont take nutrition advice from most doctors. :)
Most recommended amounts of protein include safety margins,
and most Americans get in more protein than they need already.
>>So this the reason they give for ordering their steaks. is this
true?
Steaks are not neccessary to get in enough protein.
Unless that is a BeefSteak tomato. :)
In fact, I will steak my career on it.
>>Do we need more protein as we age? Do you think I am getting
enough?
With the little information you give me, my answer is.. I dont know.
:)
But you can find out easily. Enter your daily intake into a online or
downloadable nutrient analysis program. There are many for free.
One is www.fitday.com
Or search the web for the CRON-O-Meter, which is one of my
favorites to use and is free. You can easily download it.
Animal protein is not neccessary to get in enough protein. Pure
and simple. Anyway who says that is a nutritional idiot.
I will make you a simple challenge I have made many others,...
It is impossible for you to design and diet that is protein deficient
as long as you follow 3 simple principles..
1) eat enough calories to maintain your healthy weight
2) Eat a wide variety of unrefined unprocessed plant foods (not just
fruit)
3) eliminate or avoid processed foods and junk foods
Let me know
