jeff, I work with a school group of elementary-age children, and there is one mom in the group who is trying to "bulk up" her 8 year old son (yeah, you read that right, he's a third-grader) to play tackle on the football team. So, she has him on a high-calorie, high-protein, low-carb diet with all these protein-powder supplements. we gave the kids fresh fruit for a snack one day, while on a hike, and she had a hissy fit that we were giving him carbs (he is not diabetic, and does not have any dietary restrictions that come from a medical professional) and insisted he get a protein shake instead - even though we had no reasonable way to mix such a drink out on the trail. I think this lady has a screw loose, myself, but maybe I'm wrong. what's your take, and what, if anything, should I tell her about the effects of protein loading and bulking up for preadolescent children?
