Hi Ann

When you buy raw whole flax seeds and consume them as such, then they would be a raw whole food.

Your experience is not unusual because they are a small seed that has a tough outer coat, and so not everyone can chew them up sufficiently. So, as a result, many people see them "pass thru."

The best thing to do is to grind them up. You can do it yourself of by them pre ground. Once ground, they will stay fresh in the refrigerator for around 3 months.
