I stopped smoking after reading Anthony Robbins' "Awaken the giant within" - it is not a book about smoking, but rather about making decisions or goals and then finding the way to achieve them, no matter what. One of the examples he uses is smoking: he teaches the basics of a technique (NLP) that you use to change the associations in you own mind. I also read another little book (very little, I actually finished it in the shop!), it was basically also about mind-associations. The theory is that as long as you keep thinking how much you enjoy smoking (ie. pictures of sitting on the porch relaxing etc) you are STRENGTHENING the positive association to smoking that you have built up over many years.. You in fact need to do the opposite - turn the positive associations into negative ones using the visualisation techniques of NLP - you will truly find that after a while it comes naturally! The tapes in your mind CAN be changed! You just have to make the first consciouss changes yourself, and after a while your subconsciouss will take over for you! I havent touched a cigarette for two and a half years, and whats more, I am 100% confident that I will never touch another one in my life (and I was a heavy smoker who 'loved' my "one vice" as I called it).. There are a lot of NLP books on the market, go to www.amazon.com and try a well rated one out - it worked brilliantly for me and now I am truly REPULSED by smoke (I dont complain or make faces at smokers though, I know how annoying that is). The bottom line is that you need to convince your subconsciouss that smoking is in fact a disgusting habit (building a very strong negative association)- as long as you carry a torch for it and secretly wish you didnt 'have to' stop, you will never put it properly behind you - good luck, hope this helps those who want to quit!
