Hi Marilyn,

The ear infections are VERY likely from the milk products. Below are just a few of hundreds of links you can find if you search in google for "ear infections" and "milk". Milk is NOT necessary for healthy growth (remember, all those messages about milk being a perfect food, milk for strong bones, etc are PAID ADVERTISEMENTS from the dairy industry!!) Neighbors of mine do not use dairy in any sort in their home, and their 2 children went thru toddler-hood without A SINGLE ear infection. They are now in their older childhood years and are healthier than most kids.

At 15 months old, you may safely move your daughter right into soy milks and other non-dairy milks (before 12 months of age, if not breastfeeding, one needs to use a commercial soy formula).

And yes, eliminate not just dairy milk but ALL dairy. (Watch for hidden dairy in foods like crackers, breads, margarine .. things like whey, dry milk solids, casein).

The temporary inconvenience of the transition will MORE than be offset by a child without ear infections!! And trust me, the transition IS temporary ... at first, it will seem SO very inconvenient doing without dairy, but as you learn the replacement foods, it will be very easy after a while. And do check out "The Ultimate Uncheese Cookbook" by Joanne Stepaniak. Includes all sorts of dairy free recipes for everything from Grilled "Cheese" sandwiches, to "Cheese" sauces to Chocolate Pie!!

Also, Bryanna has a very helpful web page on eating dairy free. Her forum here on Vegsource is here.

Here's a helpful site on being dairy free in childhood.

One more great resource I've found: "Raising Vegetarian Children" by Joanne Stepaniak and Vesanto Melina is a great book (its subtitle is "A Guide to Good Health and Family Harmony") about dealing with all the "helpful" interference one gets when trying to raise a vegetarian child .... like worried grandparents saying, "What do you MEAN you're not feeding your child milk ... children HAVE to have milk!" Even if you're not planning to eliminate meat, just dairy, I think you'll find this book very helpful.

Hope this helps!!

Brenda
