My allergist told me that the more allergens you're exposed to together, the more you'll react to each of them. So if you're allergic to cats and dairy, just consuming dairy, but not having cats, or having cats, but not eating dairy, will produce a more minor reaction than owning cats and eating dairy. My dairy allergy went undetected until I got cats, and then I started having serious reactions every time I consumed dairy products (as well as strong reactions to the cats). I eliminated the dairy but kept the cats, and now my cat allergies are much improved! They're not 100% gone but most days I am totally fine.
