I'm in Central FL between Tampa and Orlando. The apartments here start at about $700 a month. Naturally, some are cheaper and others are waaaay more expensive.
If Social Security is your only source of income, have you considered that you might be eligible for some type of govt assisted housing?
Some of those places are pretty nice and the rent is based on your income.
I'm not sure how old you are but there is government assistance for senior housing available. My mom lives in such an apartment in the panhandle of Florida. It is a neat, clean, well maintained building in a decent area. Of course, there are waiting lists for that type of living. But often, if the applicant has no permanent place to live, their names are moved closer to the top of the list. I don't know all the details but it might be worth a web search.
