Another possible US mad cow case found
02:18 PM CDT on Wednesday, July 27, 2005

Associated Press

WASHINGTON — The government is investigating another possible case of mad cow disease, an Agriculture Department official said Wednesday.

Testing indicated the presence of the disease in a cow that died on the farm where it lived, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the department had not yet announced the news. The official would not say where the farm was.

The department is conducting further tests and is sending a brain tissue sample to the internationally recognized laboratory in Weybridge, England, the official said.

Two other cases of mad cow disease have been confirmed in the United States. One was confirmed last month in a Texas cow that died in November. The other was in a Canadian-born cow discovered in December 2003 in Washington state.

In the latest case, the cow died on the farm where it lived, and a private veterinarian removed brain tissue for sampling, the official said. Because the tissue was preserved so that it could travel from a remote location, only one type of testing, immunohistochemistry, can be done, the official said.

Initial rapid screening and Western blot testing can't be done on the sample, the official said.
