U.S. Conducts Mock Foot-And-Mouth Outbreak
BY RANDY FABI
Reuters

WASHINGTON - In a mock bioterrorist attack, a U.S. outbreak of the highly contagious foot-and-mouth disease spread from just a handful of states to more than 30 within two weeks, the U.S. Agriculture Department said on Tuesday.

The U.S. government exercise "Crimson Sky" was held amid increasingly tough talk by President Bush, who accuses Iraqi President Saddam Hussein of hoarding biological and chemical weapons of mass destruction.

Monday's simulation was the first in a series of six exercises to test how effective the USDA and other federal agencies would be in responding to an attack on the agriculture system. The USDA would be the lead agency in such a situation.

The introduction of a farm livestock ailment such as foot-and-mouth disease or mad cow disease would have a far-reaching impact. Agriculture accounts for $1.5 trillion of the U.S. economy, or nearly 16 percent of the gross domestic product.
