Japan has again refused to resume the US beef imports in the Wednesday's telephone talk.

Japan has again refused to resume the US beef imports in the Wednesday's telephone conversation between the two countries' top farm officials.

U.S. Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns told Japanese farm minister Yoshinobu Shimamura that Japan's ban on American beef imports has caused a big problem in the US stock breeding and urged the resumption of the US beef imports.

But Yoshinobu Shimamura insisted Japan needs a scientific procedure for resuming the imports and claimed more details from the United States to prove the safety of beef.

Japan was once the largest U.S. beef importer, but has banned the imports since BSE, commonly known as mad cow disease, was discovered in the United States for the first time in December 2003.
