Lisbon alert over 'mad cow' disease
LISBON: Portuguese medical authorities yesterday said they suspected a young man had contracted variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, the human form of the deadly bovine ailment known as "mad cow disease."

If confirmed the case would be the first of VCJD in Portugal. VCJD is a human form of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), as mad cow disease is known scientifically.

The bovine version is caused by a rogue protein that proliferates in the brain, turning it spongy.

The Portuguese government health office said the identity of the suspected victim, who lived with his parents, could not be revealed.
