City man tells of CJD fears after surgery

Wed 1 Jun 2005

A FATHER-OF-TWO fears he may be at risk of the human version of mad cow disease after brain surgery at an Edinburgh hospital.

Tim McWhannell, 44, discovered he had a brain tumour after losing feeling in his left arm in 1990. He was operated on at the Western General Hospital.

On Monday, the Evening News revealed around 50 patients treated at the hospital could be at risk of Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease.

Mr McWhannell, of Brunstane, has called the hospital and is waiting to be told whether he is at risk. He said: "At the moment I'm in a state of shock. I don't know whether I'm at risk. But if they don't have the records it's possible they won't be able to tell me."
