TOKYO — A 5-year-old Holstein cow in Sunagawa, Hokkaido, was diagnosed
as the 18th case of mad cow disease in Japan, the Ministry of Health,
Labor and Welfare said Thursday.
The cow was born in August 1999 — before feeding cows with meat-and-bone
meal was banned in 2001 due to fear of infection with the disease called
bovine spongiform encephalopathy, ministry officials said. (Kyodo News)
