SRM breaches reported over the past month
Imported SRM breach
The MHS has reported finding six consignments of fresh beef tongues, 192
tongues in total, exported to the UK from the Republic of Ireland, which
have not been harvested in accordance with the TSE Regulations that
require tongues be removed in such a way as to minimise the risk of
lingual tonsil (which is SRM) remaining attached to the tongue.

The breaches were discovered on the 23 and 24 February and the 1 and 8
of March 2005.

These breaches were not the fault of the receiving premises.

We are awaiting a formal report from the Irish authorities following an
investigation.

The European Commission and Chief Veterinary Officer in Ireland have
been notified of these breaches.

Background on SRM issues

* SRM is those parts of the animal most likely to contain BSE
infectivity

* The SRM controls remove over 99% of BSE infectivity that may be
present in cattle

* Under European Union (EU) law, SRM must be removed as soon as
possible after slaughter, stained and disposed of safely

* The Regulations requires that bovine tongue must be removed by a
transverse cut rostral to the lingual process of the basihyoid bone

* Finds of specified risk material in imported beef and sheepmeat 2005
