Extra funding for US BSE research

THE United States Department of Agriculture
(USDA) has announced an expansion
of its BSE research programme,
following the redirectionof almost US$2
million in funding. New projects which
will be funded with this money will
include an international collaboration
with the Veterinary Laboratories Agency
to study the biology of the BSE agent.
The USDA says that the extra funds
will build on the US presidents budget
proposal for the fiscal year 2006, which
will increase funding for BSE research
by US$7∑3 million, or 155 per cent over
2005 levels. Other international collaborations
are also planned, with the
Italian BSE Reference Laboratory to evaluate
the present diagnostic tools for
detecting atypical BSE cases, and with the
University of Santiago de Compostela in
Spain to compare North American and
European strains of BSE.
