PAGE 27 STARTS BSE RELATED ISSUES ;

Conclusions

Since 1998, only a few animals displaying nervous symptoms were tested
for BSE. The active surveillance programme, which started mid 2001,
covers healthy slaughtered cattle over 30 months of age only. The
envisaged number of 100 cattle tested per year could not be achieved
in 2001 and 2002 due to unsuitable samples and limited co-operation
between the veterinary services and the central veterinary laboratory.
The surveillance is not sufficiently supervised and no corrective actions
have been taken...
