FUNERAL OF CJD CAMPAIGNER

12:00 - 16 February 2005
A Funeral for the campaigning father of a Ripley man who died of mad cow disease was held yesterday.

Terry Warne's son, 36-year-old Chris, died from Creutzfeld Jakob Disease in October, 1997.

Mr Warne, 72, suffered from Parkinson's disease for 14 years and died on February 3 at Derbyshire Royal Infirmary, two days after having a stroke.

Mr Warne and his wife Shirley, 67, campaigned to raise awareness of CJD following their son's death.

Shirley Warne led mourners into a packed All Saints' Church, in Church Street, Ripley, for yesterday's service.

The Rev Adrian Butt paid tribute to Mr Warne, his friend of 60 years.

A keen sportsman, Mr Warne established the Chris Warne Memorial Shield as an annual cricket competition.

He was a lifelong Derby County FC supporter, a cricket umpire in the Derbyshire League for 20 years and he enjoyed rugby and walking.

He worked in the textile industry
