Greetings , 1- INTRODUCTION. Diseases of the Central Nervous System , similar in symptoms and transmission routes , form a family of diseases called : Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies ( TSE's ). Humans and animals are susceptible to TSE's. The causative agent is not known. 2- APPROACH. In our attempt to understand TSE's , we proposed to study the oldest disease known to us : the scrapie. 3- CHOICE OF THE EXPERIMENTAL SITE. In the early 18 th century , scrapie was widely spread among sheep populations in many European states . In the United Kingdom the scrapie prevalence was the highest ; that is the reason why we have taken this country as an experimental site to study the origin of scrapie and the nature of its causative agent . 4- CONCLUSION. Some of our major findings: A- Scrapie : The enigma involving the naturally occurring process leading to the disease is solved. B- Human diseases : vCJD , sCJD The causative agent of the variant CJD and sporadic CJD are understood. 5- ETHIC. Emotional investments, personal and economic interests in academic success may lead scientists to over emphasize the importance of their findings. Therefore we will submit our work to an external investigation teams as soon as our findings are protected . Rabah Khettabet group advisor.
