MOSCOW, Jan. 14 (UPI) -- Russian officials are calling for an
investigation into attempts to smuggle illegal Canadian and U.S. beef
liver into the country.
Officials at Rosselkhoznadzor, Russia's federal service for veterinary
and sanitary control, called for a complete investigation into last
year's attempts to smuggle beef liver from Canada and the United States,
the Russian Interfax news agency said. The danger is the meat might have
been contaminated with mad cow disease.
The liver was shipped under false certificates, the agency said.
Russia earlier imposed a ban on import of U.S. and Canadian beef and
beef products, the strana.ru Web site said.
Mad cow disease, or bovine spongiform encephalopathy, is a fatal,
neurodegenerative disease of cattle, often spreading in epidemic
fashion. The disease causes holes in the brain, degeneration of mental
abilities and death. There are documented cases of the disease being
transmitted to humans who have eaten meat contaminated with the mad cow
pathogen.
