Food chain fears over latest BSE case

Meat and remnants from animals that may have eaten the same feed as a
dairy cow confirmed with Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) could
have ended up in Canada's human food and cattle feed chain.

Officials with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency confirmed the
disturbing news Friday morning.

The CFIA stresses that the possibility of a human contracting the fatal
disease associated with BSE, Variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (vCJD),
is very small.

The agency is trying to track down 141 dairy and beef cows that were
part of the birth herd that included the latest mad cow disease case.

Half of those animals have been accounted but the other half have yet to
be traced.

Officials stress that consumers should not be concerned about the beef
they have eaten.

The CFIA is also addressing reports that four feed suppliers have been
found to have product containing remnants from cattle and other ruminants.

The agency insists that their feed ban surveillance measures are working.
