POMEROY REACTS TO POSSIBLE CASE OF MAD COW IN CANADA
Thursday, December 30, 2004 at 3:35 PM
Bismarck -- In response to USDA’s announcement to resume imports of
Canadian cattle regardless of the detection of a possible case of BSE in
Canada, Congressman Earl Pomeroy issued the following statement:
“For USDA to continue to insist on importing Canadian cattle regardless
of whether this cow has BSE or not is outrageous. Their insistence on
importing Canadian cattle under these circumstances demonstrates that
the leadership of USDA cares more about the interests of mega feed lots
and processors than the interests of farmers, ranchers, and consumers.”
Pomeroy’s comments come on the heels of a statement today issued by Dr.
Ron DeHaven Administrator of USDA’s Animal Health Inspection Service. In
the statement, DeHaven said, “If this animal proves to be positive, it
would not alter the implementation of the U.S. rule announced yesterday
that recognizes Canada as a Minimal-Risk Region.”
Dr. DeHaven’s complete statement is available at www.usda.gov
