Cantwell demands FDA action on mad cow prevention 12:38 PM PST on Tuesday, December 14, 2004 From KING Staff and Wire Reports SEATTLE - Washington Sen. Maria Cantwell said Tuesday the Food and Drug Administration has failed to require changes in animal feed to prevent mad cow disease. It was just about one year ago that the first U.S. case of the disease was found in a dairy cow from Mabton. KING Sen. Maria Cantwell Less than a month after that discovery, National Agriculture Secretary Ann Venemen's agency announced plans to close several loopholes that it felt left the U.S. beef industry open for a second case. As of this month, that hasn't happened. "We want those loopholes closed. We want Washington cattlemen who've lost millions of dollars to have the opportunity to produce the product and have it shipped overseas," said Cantwell. Cantwell said the loopholes include bans in blood products in all farm feed products, the use of poultry litter in feed products, and the use of restaurant waste in feed production. The proposed rules also would prevent cross-contamination at feed plants. Cantwell said the action is necessary to reduce the risk of mad cow disease, restore consumer confidence and reassure international markets. http://www.king5.com/localnews/stories/NW_121404WABmadcowSW.c839c5a.html TSS
