Twomey calls on Ag Dept to investigate meat and bonemeal in animal feed
Thursday, November 04

Fine Gael Health Spokesperson Dr Liam Twomey TD has today (Thursday) called on the Department of Agriculture to investigate an allegation that meat and bonemeal is being used by an animal feed company in the South East.

"It has been alleged that meat and bonemeal is being used by a company in the South East in the manufacture of animal feed. This is a cause for grave concern. The use of meat and bonemeal in ruminant feed is banned, with good reason, and the risk of vCJD getting into the food cycle is extremely serious.

"In light of a case, identified by the Department of Agriculture earlier this week, where imported animal feed ingredients were found to be contaminated with bone traces, the Department must immediately investigate whether this risk is widespread.

"This is a serious public health issue as well as possibly being a criminal matter and it must be dealt with immediately by the Government."
