Dear Colleagues,
It is my great pleasure to invite you to Sendai and the International Symposium of
Prion Diseases held here from October 31 to November 2.,2004
Sendai is the city in which the International Congress of Virology was held in 1984.
It was the first meeting at which it was argued intensely whether the etiologic agent
of transmissible spongiform encephalopathy (TSE) is a prion or a scrapie-associated
fibril (SAF). The invited speakers at this symposium who have come to the fore in
current prion research did not sit in on that 1984 argument. For that reason,
it is fitting that this second generation of prion researchers will gather right in Sendai
again exactly 20 years after that momentous meeting.
There are two purposes for this international symposium:
One is obtaining correct information for food and drug safety in Japan, which has
been under exposure recently to emerging animal prion diseases such as bovine
spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) and chronic wasting disease of deer (CWD).
The other purpose is the cultivation of the next generation of researchers
who will be active in the forefront of this field for the next 20 years.
It would be a fruitful result of this Symposium if this third generation of
prion researchers should mark their participation in this Symposium.
We welcome active discussion at this mid-autumn Symposium.
During breaks from the stimulating discussion, please enjoy the autumn breezes
and beautiful vividly shaded trees of Sendai.
We look forward to seeing you in Sendai.
With best regards,
Tetsuyuki Kitamoto Kenji Yoshihara
