TOKYO — Japan and the United States failed to conclude high-level negotiations Friday on finding a breakthrough to lift Japan's ban on American beef due to mad cow disease, and decided to continue talks Saturday, Japanese government officials said.
The two sides gave up attempts to wrap up the negotiations, originally scheduled for Thursday and Friday in Tokyo, due to remaining gaps over issues such as how to verify the age of a cow, a focal point in determining the course of the talks, the officials said.
