Ulster lawmaker wants citizens notified of contaminated food

Ulster County legislator Robert Aiello of Saugerties yesterday called on
his colleagues to adopt a memorializing measure calling on the state to
urge the federal government to require the public notification when food
is contaminated.

Aiello’s concern surfaced after reports of the deaths of five Ulster
County residents for a variant of Mad Cow Disease. He would like to see
more public disclosure placed on contaminated food. “In the event of a
recall of contaminated meat, it would provide the information about that
contamination not only to the store but to the general public,” he said
of his proposal.

Aiello said currently 11 states have signed a memorandum of
understanding with the US Department of Agriculture, which would release
more information to certain officials, but that information can not be
shared with local health officials or the public.

Aiello said people are becoming frightened that the recent Ulster County
deaths may have been related to contaminated food and more has to be
done to locate the source.
