15 separate investigations underway into BSE problem

At the moment there are 15 separate investigations underway into how cattle are still being infected with BSE.

Tough restrictions are in place in Ireland in an effort to eradicate the disease.

One case under investigation involves the infection of a six-year-old cow in a Co Mayo dairy herd.

It is not known where the animal contracted BSE, as it was born after regulations were imposed that were supposed to end any chance of contaminated meat and bonemeal being fed to cattle.

Some of the investigations have been underway for two years.
