Bush lobbies for beef exports, Japan shrugs

President George W. Bush made an informal request to Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi that Japan end its ban on imports of American beef products, but got at best a noncommittal promise to accelerate negotiations.

In a signal that Japan is in no hurry to end the ban, a Japanese health official said that the country was more concerned with improving its own inspection procedures for cattle first, and would not address the U.S. import ban until it had settled that issue. According to Asia Pulse, Japanese food safety chief Hiroshi Nakagawa said, "We will move on to Japan-U.S. talks on lifting the ban after specifics about the new domestic inspection regime are decided."

Bush and Koizumi met at the United Nations after Bush's speech there defending the Iraq war.
