13th case of mad cow disease

From correspondents in Tokyo

JAPAN confirmed its 13th case of mad cow disease today, after a
slaughtered Holstein tested positive for the brain-wasting illness, a
government official said.

The 8-year-old dairy cow in Nara prefecture (state) had shown signs of
bovine spongiform encephalopathy, or BSE, in preliminary examinations

It then tested positive for the illness in a precise exam given by a
state-run infectious disease research institute in Tokyo, said Seiichiro
Minese, of the Nara food safety office.

The cow's meat and organs had not gone on the market and the meat
processing centre where it was dismembered would be thoroughly
disinfected, officials said.

Under a comprehensive screening system put in place after an outbreak
three years ago, Japan tests every animal that is killed before it
enters the food supply. Tokyo has also banned the use of meat-and-bone
meal - made from ruminant animal parts - in cattle feed.

Nara prefecture is about 380km west of Tokyo.,5936,10850564%255E1702,00.html
