CAN says no private BSE testing

Canadian government squelches rumor of private BSE testing

Despite rumors last week that the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA)
would approve an application for a new beef cooperative in Alberta to
conduct private testing for bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), a
spokesperson for the agency told Feedstuffs today that only government
BSE testing is currently allowed.

"We still don't allow private testing," said Marc Richards, a media
relations official with CFIA.

The agency issued the clarification after Canadian press reports late
last week indicated that the government might allow the new Tender Beef
Co-Op, which is scheduled to begin production in 2005 in British
Columbia, to conduct 100% private testing.

Richards pointed out that the beef exports require government export
certificates that say they are disease free. "That is a
government-to-government function, not a business-to-business function,"
he said.
