Ozzy Osbourne Diagnosed With Human Form Of Mad Cow Disease
August 08, 2004
by James Sparks, Entertainment Editor
Ozzy Osbourne has been diagnosed with the human form of mad cow disease,
variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD), according to reports. There is
no cure or treatment for the brain wasting disease.
One UK news tabloid suggested Osbourne likely contracted the disease in
the late 90's, a time when he was known to consume raw beef products in
local upper-end bistros.
Although speculation over how Osbourne contracted the disease is
questionable, one source close to the family suggested Ozzy may have
contracted the disease last year when he received a blood transfusion
after experiencing a serious accident while driving his ATV at his UK
residence.
Recent reports indicate vCJD can be spread through blood transfusions,
and or medical equipment contaminated with the infectious prions not
thoroughly sterilized.
There is also speculation that Ozzy's brain wasting may have been
brought on by years of drug an alcohol abuse. However, cruel as it may
be, others suggest Ozzy may not have much brain remaining to be wasted.
Leading some people to believe the disease will have no real negative
effect on the star.
We attempted to contact Mr. Osbourne for comment, however, the heavy
metal star did not return our calls. A publicist representing Mr.
Osbourne would only say that an official announcement would be made over
the next 48 to 72 hours.
