The Animal Disease Research and Diagnostic Lab (ADRDL) has announced
that a new rapid test for chronic wasting disease (CWD) in deer and elk
is available this fall. During hunting season, the lab will provide
results within 72 hours of receiving a fresh retropharyngeal lymph node.
The lab stressed that it is very important that the lymph node not be
frozen after it is gathered.
There is a lab fee of $20 for the test, plus a $7 case accession
fee. Samples may be delivered to the laboratory on the SDSU campus or
submitted through local veterinarians. Information on how to collect the
retropharyngeal lymph node has been distributed to veterinarians and the
extension offices across the state.
For more information, contact the SDSU Animal Disease Research and
Diagnostic Lab at (605)688-5171, or its Web site,

SDSU Extension Extra 11012, "How to collect a sample from your
deer or elk for chronic wasting disease analysis," discusses sampling
procedures. We have copies in the Extension Office, or it may be found
online at http://sdces.sdstate.edu/.
