First mad cow of the year detected on Girona farm

The department of Agriculture, Food and Rural Action (DAR) has confirmed the first case of mad cow disease this year on a smallholding in Girona's Vall d'en Bas area.

Since the first infected animal was detected on the 30th March 2001, there have now been 57 confirmed cases in the Cataluña region.

Although the disease is thought to be in decline, rigorous control measures remain in place including compulsory testing of all susceptible animals after 24 months, as well as of all suspected cases regardless of age.
