Details sought from UK re unusual brain disease in NZ sheep there New Zealand authorities have sought details from British scientists following reports a new form of an unusual brain disease has been discovered in a New Zealand sheep in the UK. Britain's Veterinary Laboratories Agency says the atypical form of the disease, scrapie, has been detected in a six-year-old cheviot ewe on a research farm. Its New Zealand-raised sire and dam had been kept in quarantine since being sent to Britain. Biosecurity New Zealand's assistant director-general, Barry O'Neill, says this country is free of scrapie, and the agency will try to track down the flocks from which the ram and its mate were selected. The diseases, which are considered harmless to humans; are part of a family of diseases which includes mad cow disease.
