Glenview Professional Firefighters Association Local No. 4186 is holding a benefit for Glenview Fire Lt. Dave Garman, who has been diagnosed with Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease. The rare and fatal neuro-degenerative brain disease strikes one person in a million, or approximately 200 Americans every year. There is no cure. A 28-year veteran of the department, Garman is married with three college-age sons. Because the disease is not related to his work, he will not be afforded the benefit of a duty disability. The association has planned an evening of appetizers, cocktails, raffles and a silent auction "celebrating Dave as a husband, father, friend, firefighter and one of the nicest guys we know." The event is scheduled from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at The Glen Club, 2901 West Lake, Glenview. Donations will be accepted at the door. Checks should be made payable to: The Dave Garman Benefit Fund, in care of Glenview State Bank, 800 Waukegan Road, Glenview IL 60025. For directions to the event, visit the Web site at www.theglenclub.com. http://www.pioneerlocal.com/cgi-bin/ppo-story/localnews/current/gv/02-02-06-nwsbrf.html TSS
