Report: Japan to test cow for possible mad cow infection(Updated 05:36 p.m.)

2006/1/22
TOKYO (AP)

Japan will conduct further tests on a dead cow suspected of having mad cow disease in northern Japan, following inconclusive results earlier, a news report said Sunday.

Samples from the cow will be sent from Japan's northern island of Hokkaido to a testing facility near Tokyo to check whether it had bovine spongiform encephalopathy, Kyodo News agency reported, citing local heath officials.

Bovine spongiform encephalopathy, or mad cow disease, is a degenerative cattle nerve illness linked to the rare and fatal human nerve disorder Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease.

A preliminary test for mad cow disease conducted Saturday was inconclusive, Kyodo said, adding that the outcome of the latest test is expected in several days.

An official at the Hokkaido prefectural office could not confirm the report.
