Austrian Vets Confirm BSE in Slovenian Cow

The Austrian Health Ministry has confirmed that a cow imported to Austria from a farm in the northeastern Slovenian region of Prlekija had mad cow disease (BSE), public broadcaster RTV Slovenija reported on Wednesday, 24 August.

The preliminary results of the routine test conducted by the veterinary institute in Graz had shown that the cow, imported for slaughter, was infected with BSE, RTV Slovenija also said. The Austrian and Slovenian authorities acted immediately, quarantining the farm in Slovenia as well as the abattoir in Austria, and disposing of the carcass.

This is the fifth case of the disease, formally known as bovine spongiform encephalopathy, in Slovenia in the last five years.
