(10 through 19 = 9; 20-29 = 18; etc)
You are subtracting the 10s column from the number of 10s (and the 1s column from itself so it goes away). The same would work if you said take any multiple of 10 and subtact that multiple from it 10-1=9 20-2 = 18.

Now go play it again and all multiples of 9 have the same value so it will correctly predict that value.
