This may be too late, but I have cousins around the 8-12 years old range and they really enjoyed a carnivorous plant. I got them a venus fly trap and a sundew from My Carnivore (http://www.mycarnivore.com). They came in terrariums with decorations, toys, and dried flies, though your boys can probably catch their own bugs. If your kids are into the outdoors, they may really enjoy a venus fly trap.
