I have had hypothyroidism for well over 20 years, and have been taking the generic synthroid, levothyroxine (200 mcg/day). Make sure your doctor is checking your diet and that you have not had any other organ complications. Due to this condition I have been unable to beear children, which is a common side effect.

There is another way to treat it, which my pharmacist just brought to my attention, but, if you are vegetarian or vegan will not be a solution. Using Adrenal Powder from Bovine. This is not an option for me, but your doctor might have more information on ir for you.
