When you think about it a better question might be, "What do I have to be perky and happy about?" The sad fact is that most of us are bound by some incarnation of wage/salary slavery. We live in an isolationist culture with no true ties to a community, our land base or any real meaning beyond hollow titles, ie., mechanic, auditor, PHD etc. that have little or no connection with our real passion [if we can even remember what that is.] At worst we were beaten or molested as children. At best we were systematicaly taught dependence on the aforementioned economic system, told we were powerless/stupid and filled with a confusion, insecurity, self-hatred, and sense of futility that haunts most of us to this day. As If that weren't enough you also have your daily struggles to grapple with, loss of loved ones, fear of survival, the constant roller of wars and tragedy. Trust me when I say that you are not alone. There is nothing wrong with you. Your feelings are a perfectly natural response to your surroundings. The upside here is that there are ways of recognizing the situation and instead of medicating it, getting the help you need to metabolize your grief. You can't do it alone. The culture that insists that you should is patently insane.
