Hi Tricia,

I'm sorry for what your friend is going through.

I personally don't know of any really specific holistic treatments for this level of cancer - thankfully, I've never had to look into it. And unfortunately, to quote a well-known MD, "Cancer is much more preventable than it is treatable."

But people *do* beat it - sometimes with surgery, sometimes with radiation, sometimes other means.

It's hard to say "what I would do," because I believe none of us can really know what we'd do until we're in that situation. But I'll take a stab at it: first off, read the book _Eat to Live_ by Joel Fuhrman, MD (the guy who made the quote above). Your friend needs to build an environment in her body that is NOT cancer-friendly, and this is a good way to do it. The book is aimed at the weight-loss crowd, but it's good for anyone who needs to really improve their health in a big way. Another "simple" thing is to keep a very positive attitude. There are studies out there showing a connection between faith, and even humor, and healing. Don't watch the news, don't spend time with negative people, just live "in denial." Your friend won't care if she doesn't know the latest statistics on murder if it means she's healthy! Also, she might consider making peace with any past hurts, griefs, etc, writing thank you notes, or making apologies for any "outstanding" issues from long ago. It's easier than she might think, and she can face her illness with a totally clean slate.

The second thing that I, personally, would probably do is pay a good long visit to my own naturopath and see what he would recommend. No telling what the recommendation would be - he is well-versed in so many different areas of alternative care, but I know this guy and trust him implicitly. I'm assuming your friend doesn't have an ND. If, by any chance, she lives in a town with an accredited naturopathic medical school, they would have a clinic where she could see a naturopath.

If my own ND were not available and I couldn't find another I could trust, I'd go with this route because at a school clinic, the doctors have easy access to a bunch of experts they can consult if need be. (I'd probably make a special trip, in fact, for just this purpose - I'd contact them ahead of time to coordinate getting medical records, etc.)

I want to be very clear... I don't know much about cancer, but I do know that Stage 4 metastatic cancer is serious business, and I'm guessing the survival rate is dismal. It usually is for cancer. I have no idea if an ND could "cure" her, and it's possible that an ND would study her case and then turn around and recommend surgery, if he/she didn't believe holistic methods offered a better option. I'm just saying what I believe I, personally, would do in a similar situation, but your friend has to take ownership, do the appropriate research and ultimately make her own informed decision.

I'm pasting a link below - this website not only gives info on accredited ND schools, but also has a link (somewhere) to a list of alternative health journals where your friend could probably get more info. Also, there's at least one link to find an ND in her area. Note that most ND schools also have info on their websites for their graduates who have set up practice, which is another possible way to find someone, if she wants to.

Good luck,
RS
