Another treatment that has proved curing is a MIXTURE of tea tree oil AND a topical drug like Mentax or Penlac. The tea tree oil penetrates the Keratin shell of the nail, and the Mentax delivers the fatal blow to the fungus. Diflucan is an effective oral drug, with not as many side affects as Lamasil or Sporanox. Filing the hard shell of the nail or having a doctor remove the major part of the nail, then treating with topical and tea tree oil will cure the stuborn cases and allow a new, beautiful nail to grow in. Just applying to a hard nail surface is almost always a waisted effort, as the surface must be penetrated to get to the fungus growing INSIDE the nail. Another effective home remedy is to apply Distilled White Vinegar 2 times daily and after showers/baths. And once a week, soak in the vinegar for 20 min. while reading a good book or something. Do this for 7 months or so. Some Doctors use Boric acid or Urea mixtures to penetrate and soften the nail, getting at the fungus, but I prefer vinegar myself, seems safer. Bleach and caustic chemicals run risks, like other tissue damage, or in one reported case, cancer followed by toe amputation. So be smart out there and do your "google searching" well. I picked my fungus up in Hawaii and it proved too strong for tea tree oil alone, had to do manual filing (dremel tool helps in this)of the nail shell, then apply the topical treatments. Do not believe the doctors who say it is incurable, because it is... even the tough cases. There are also special diets and herbs that will fight the fungus from the inside and not let it live in you. But you will have to talk to someone more knowledgeable then me to find out about that.
