The whole removing metal fillings idea is not supported by much evidence. In fact, you will exposure yourself to more mercury by removing the old fillings, which requires that the edges be drilled and thus some of the metal removed into your mouth. Mercury amalgam fillings can last a lifetime if properly cared for, and will not expose you to any mercury contamination because the mercury is bonded with other metals and does not leach out. If the fillings are damaged they should be removed and replaced. Please note that the composite fillings, while safe, do not last as long and you will have to have them refilled in as few as three years.
