I am currently studying to become an acupuncturist. Hopefully the following information will help!

The typical education for an acupuncturist in the US is a 3-4 year master's degree program at an accredited school (which includes a one year internship) that allows you to take the national exam for licensure. They are not usually referred to as Doctors (unless they are already an MD, ND, DO, etc), but licensed acupuncturists (LAc). I believe that only one or two states allow for US-trained licensed acupuncturists (at the master's level) to be referred to as Doctor. However, several schools in the US are beginning to offer doctoral programs in Chinese Medicine - I believe these people will be able to be called Doctors. Their degree will usually be something like a DAOM - doctoral of acupuncture and oriental medicine.
