cathy,

Your husband needs to see a local licensed naturopathic physician. Ask such a doctor to implement the following protocol. I am presently in the very initial stages of an involved process so that I can secure a grant for clinical research in naturopathic medicine from this group http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PAR-04-082.html to confirm the efficacy of my approach.

I've found that writing the proposal for and securing a research grant is no small task. My point here is that I don't yet have objective clinical proof that this approach works and, hence, no one other than a licensed N.D. will be willing or yet able to guide you through this approach given that clinical reality.

I would actively discourage trying my protocol without the counsel of a licensed N.D.

The botanical/lifestyle approach that I employ has reduced or normalized LFTs and dropped viral load as evaluated by PCR in every patient with whom I've had the opportunity to use it, dramatically so in some. Labs evidence response within three to six months.

The botanical medicines I employ include medicinal mushrooms (manufactured to pharmaceutical standards by Mycology Research Laboratory Limited out of UK), silybum marianum (as Milk Thistle Supercomplex by Rainbow Light), phyllanthus (as Livit 1 by Ayush Herbs) and a traditional Chinese patent medicine, Xiao yao wan (as Relaxed Wanderer by Kan Herbs).

Mycology Research Laboratory Ltd. is here http://www.aneid.pt/mrl/mycology.html. At that site the research & development icon will turn up abstracts of the studies they've done on their pharmaceutical grade mycological extracts.

I've used the Coriolus MRL and Triton MRL that they manufacture. In the research and development area on the MRL homepage you will see the results of one study employing Coriolus on TH1 and TH2 ratios.

The Triton MRL is composed of Reishi, Maitake and Cordyceps.

Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum) contains beta-glucan which has immunopotentiating activity (Beta-glucan functions as an adjuvant for monoclonal antibody immunotherapy by recruiting tumoricidal granulocytes as killer cells (Cancer Res 2003 Dec 15;63(24):9023-31)) and Reishi has antiviral activity (Recent progress in immunopharmacology and therapeutic effects of polysaccharides.Dev Biol Stand 1992;77:191-7), specifically Reishi interferes with viral oncogenesis.

Maitake (grifola fundosa) contains a d-fraction that induces natural killer cell activity (Effect of Maitake (Grifola frondosa) D-Fraction on the Activation of NK Cells in Cancer Patients [In Process Citation]
J Med Food 2003 Winter;6(4):371-7).

Cordyceps sinensis has been studied as effective treatment for hepatitis B (Short-term curative effect of cultured Cordyceps sinensis (Berk.) Sacc. Mycelia in chronic hepatitis B] Zhongguo Zhong Yao Za Zhi 1990 Jan;15(1):53-5, 65) and Cordyceps has been shown to slow hepatic fibrosis (Inhibitive effect of cordyceps sinensis on experimental hepatic fibrosis and its possible mechanism.World J Gastroenterol 2003 Mar;9(3):529-33 ).

Silybum marianum (milk thistle), another botanical medicine in my protocol, significantly improves survival in patients with cirrhosis (Randomized controlled trial of silymarin treatment in patients with cirrhosis of the liver.J Hepatol 1989 Jul;9(1):105-13 ).

The Chinese Medicine Xiao Yao Wan contains Bupleurum which has exhibited hepatoprotective properties (Evaluation of root quality of Bupleurum species by TLC scanner and the liver protective effects of "xiao-chai-hu-tang" prepared using three different Bupleurum species. J Ethnopharmacol 1991 Sep;34(2-3):155-65). Bupleurum has in vitro antiviral effects (Cytotoxicity and anti-hepatitis B virus activities of saikosaponins from Bupleurum species.Planta Med 2003 Aug;69(8):705-9 ). The saikosaponins derived from Bupleurum are immunostimulating ( Effect of saikosaponin on the immune responses in mice.Int J Immunopharmacol 1991;13(5):501-8).

Extensive studies on Phyllanthus amarus have confirmed this plant preparation as being anti-viral against hepatitis B and C viruses, hepatoprotective and immunomodulating, as well as possessing anti-inflammatory properties (Herbal medicines for liver diseases in India [Record Supplied By Publisher] J Gastroenterol Hepatol 2002 Dec;17 Suppl 3:S370-S376).

Diet-wise, there is a clear pattern I've witnessed in my clinical experience with people who have hepatitis C. An organic whole foods vegan diet has coincided with the most rapid, persistent and dramatic reponse to my botanical protocol. In my opinion, your husband needs to adopt a whole foods vegan diet. Joel Furman and John McDougall, both of whom have boards on this website, have published excellent books detailing the menu choices you can rely upon for choosing a health-promting vegan diet.

I hope this helps,

John
