Isn't that the definition of "middle age" - that we can't go on eating and drinking whatever we want to, like we did when we were younger!? That comment itself leads me to think that this may be a liver detoxification problem. There is a current school of thought, or health model, in alternative medicine that says this: "illness can be directly related to problems of the digestive and liver detoxification systems and their related influence on immune, nervous and endocrine system functions. Therefore, when the health of the digestive and liver detoxification systems is addressed, the body is given the opportunity to reverse many degenerative conditions." Caffeine is a toxic substance to the body. The amount of caffeine in a cup of coffee, if injected straight into your bloodstream could kill you. That is why your body speeds up your metabolism to drive it out of the body before it can do that and you feel a caffeine "buzz". Because it is toxic, it is used in lab tests, along with Acetaminophin (Tylenol), aspirin, and Sodium Benzoate (a common food preservative) to determine how well your detoxification systems are working. It's just a hunch, but I would say that your body is having trouble getting the caffeine out of your body (through your liver) as fast as it would like, and maybe not as fast as it was able to when you were younger. Now your body revs up your heart rate to compensate? There are many reasons for the digestive and liver detoxification systems to be dysfunctioning. It could be your nutritional history - remember your comment about being able to eat and drink anything you wanted? - poor eating is a big cause. Others are stress, medications, infections, yeast overgrowth, environmental toxins, use of alcohol, tobacco, recreational drugs, etc. or a combination of all these. There aren't a whole lot of people that wouldn't fall into some catagory in that list. I'll email you an article on the Nutritional Medicine model that may give you some ideas on how to start healing your digestive system, thus taking a big burden off of your liver detoxification system and allowing it to get working properly again. If anyone else wants this article, email me and I'll send it to you. Following this approach, you may in fact be able to enjoy the coffees of the world to their fullest. Of course, whether this will be the best thing for your health may be a different story. Here's saluting middle age! Rick S.
