Cornelius,
I do agree with you that the placebo effect is a valid medical tool, however, one cannot address the efficacy of the placebo effect without considering the nocebo effect. The nocebo effect is when an intervention (or the body itself) does not work, b/c the patient believes it does not work. Again, using my own experiences, the nocebo effect applies every day in obstetrics, where women believe their bodies do not work b/c the doctor believes it. And, IMO any medical intervention is potentially subject to both placebo and nocebo.

So, while I consider this an important discussion about the healing power of the mind/body, I think it is a smokescreen in the homeopathy discussion. In my experience, almost no one goes into homeopathy really expecting it to work, and certainly not to work as well as it does and in the situations in which it works. I think that if you had the personal experiences that I have had, you'd be out there looking for new methods of discovery yourself.

I have literally placed arnica in someone's mouth who has had an injury that has begun to swell rapidy, and within moments the swelling is just about gone--that person has never used homeopathy and has no understanding of how it works. That person, even in the placebo condition, would not expect the kind of healing that takes place, b/c nothing else works like that. I have experienced and/or witnessed phosphorus stop bleeding (even massive bleeding) within seconds, in a handful of different people--is this some kind of mass placebo effect taking place? Certainly, it would be neat and clean to assign homeopathy to placebo, but it doesn't apply. And, it isn't arrogant to say so.
Jennifer
