Total cholesterol is calculated by adding the three types typically measured, most accurately after 12 hours of fasting: HDL+LDL+VLDL=total cholesterol. The HDL/total cholesterol ratio is calculated by dividing total cholesterol by HDL. As an example: (total)240 mg/dl divided by(HDL)30 mg/dl = a ratio of 8.0
